How to Groom a Long-Haired Dachshund?

Ready to tenderly pamper your puppy or adult dog? π
When you have a long-haired dachshund, they sometimes need a little extra care with their beautiful fur, which can easily tangle if not properly maintained.
Here is what you need to know about grooming a long-haired dachshund in this new article π

Basic Principles of Dachshund Grooming
Fortunately for dachshund owners, this dog breed is relatively clean and has little to no body odor.
We recommend using bristle brushes because they allow you to brush the coat and manage shedding without hurting the dog, as well as using a professional grooming glove.
Also, while you are performing your brushing routine, check if any foreign matter and parasites have lodged in your dog's coat, ears, and paws (yes, it is not always visible).
It is also a good opportunity to check if the fur of your beautiful long-haired dachshund has become matted: the coat generally tangles around the ears and under the paws.
Bathing:Β
We recommend using a professional long-hair shampoo.
Since dachshunds are a clean breed, they do not need frequent baths... But if they play in the mud or run through bushes, it's definitely time for a good bath!
Experts recommend not giving your long-haired dachshund more than one bath per month, as it could dry out the natural oils in their skin and lead to irritation or loss of coat luster.
Drying:
To dry your companion, start by wiping them down with a soft towel, then use a dog-friendly hair dryer.
It may take some time before your dachshund gets used to the hair dryer, so leave it running for a few minutes in the same room before use, set to a low temperature, so they aren't frightened.
Once they are used to it, many dogs enjoy the warmth, and this is the best solution as it helps prevent future tangles in their lovely fur coat.Β
After bathing your dog, many groomers perform a light, natural-looking trim around the chest and ears before drying their long, silky strands π

Paws:
To properly groom your long-haired dachshund, arm yourself with:
- Your brush
- Your pair of thinning scissors and/or standard scissors
(a small clipper).
Take their hind legs and gently trim around the paws.
Brush the hair on top of the paws with a fine-toothed brush and, using scissors, trim the hair on top of their paws.
At the hock (where the back leg bends, like an ankle in humans), you can trim the hair into a half-moon shape π
For the front paws, you can perform the same action.
Ears:
With their adorable large ears, the dachshund is particularly prone to ear infections, which is why grooming is the ideal time to ensure their ears are healthy.
Using thinning scissors, subtly and gently clear the hair around their ears.
Puppy Cut:

Not just for puppies, the puppy cut is perfect for those who want all the benefits of a dachshund without the intensive maintenance.
Leave the hair about 3 cm long all over the body, while keeping a little more length on the ears.
The puppy cut is short enough that you don't have to brush out knots constantly, but long enough for your pooch to remain well-protected.
It is, however, important to keep up with this cut, otherwise, you will have to go back to regular grooming sessions for your dachshund.
Natural Cut:

As the name suggests, it is advantageous to keep your dog this way: natural !
Having hair at its natural length can help regulate body temperature and keep your dog looking fuss-free.
One Last Thing: Dachshund Nails

After getting their bath and nice trim, it is time to examine their nails.
Indeed, nails that are too long can hurt their paws, especially when walking on sidewalks or asphalt, which isn't known for being soft.
While you are grooming your long-haired dachshund, we advise you to trim their nails every month to avoid any damage, using a professional dog nail clipper.

Note:
We recommend asking a professional groomer or vet to show you how to properly trim your dog's nails.
Final Paw

Grooming your Long-Haired Dachshund does not necessarily require you to go to a grooming salon; you can do it yourself and take very good care of your pet.
It is entirely up to you whether to call a professional to take care of your best friend.
There are thousands of dog grooming centers in France, and you can expect to pay between β¬10 and β¬150 for each service (stripping, clipping, scissor cut, bath, maintenance).
If you feel happy and confident, you will be able to take care of it just as well.
Finally, don't forget to quickly offer them a dental ball to remove tartar.
