How to Measure my Dachshund?
In this article, we would like to give you step-by-step instructions on how to properly measure your dachshund with the help of our little NΓ©o, a wire-haired miniature dachshund.
As a reminder, there are 3 different sizes of your favorite dog breed, from smallest to largest:
- Kaninchen Dachshund (Rabbit Dachshund)
- Miniature Dachshund (like NΓ©o in our photo shoot here)
- Standard Dachshund
Below you will find 4 steps to measure your dachshund so you can properly equip them with outfits, clothing, bags, and accessories (coat, sweater, harness, collars...).
Note: You may not need all 4 measurements for your dog, depending on the reason you are measuring them.
Some dachshund clothes only require some of these measurements, such as the neck and chest, but whenever taking dimensions, you must always measure at the widest point β
By the way... What equipment is needed to measure your pet dog?
π Use a measuring tape just like we do (photo below).

1) Measuring your dog from the base of the neck to the base of the tail (BACK LENGTH)
Take the measurement from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.

2) Dimensions of your dachshund around the chest and behind the front legs (CHEST)
Take the measurement at the widest point of the chest.

3) Taking your dachshund's size around the base of the neck (NECK)
Take the measurement at the base of the neck, at the widest point.

Carrier bag collection
For our collection of carrier bags, wait until your dachshund is lying completely flat on the floor, stretched out.
Measure the length from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail:

Pro-tip

- BACK
- CHEST
- NECK
- Chest (dimension rarely requested)
You now know everything you need to measure your adorable dachshund as an adult (or puppy) and equip them with canine accessories.
The biggest difference between the various dachshund sizes is simply their size. This is quite obvious when you see them standing next to each other! Itβs just a matter of proportions...
If there is a difference to note, it is in their personality, depending on whether they are smooth-haired, wire-haired, or long-haired.
But as you may already know... once you have had a sausage dog, you will fall in love with this affectionate hunting dog, in all its shapes and sizes... and that for life. π
