Dachshund and Beagle: what happens when you cross these two dog breeds with such strong personalities? A Doxle (Doxie-Beagle), an adorable hybrid dog that has managed to keep most of the qualities we love in our dear dachshund.
In this new article, we will tell you more about this very special mix with our favorite sausage dog! π
The history of the Dachshund-Beagle cross
With a name of both German and English origin, the Dachshund-Beagle cross is a successful combination that originated in the United States. But for the time being, it seems difficult to determine exactly when the cross was first bred...
π It should be noted that the Dachshund-Beagle cross is not recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club), nor by the F.C.I. in Europe (FΓ©dΓ©ration Cynologique Internationale).
The characteristics of a Doxle
The Doxle seems to be a perfect blend of its two parents. Indeed, it has inherited the good genes and characteristics of both the doxie and the beagle π
Appearance of the Doxle
It is often said that the Doxle is a dachshund with a beagleβs head π.
We do indeed recognize this mixed-breed dog by its long, narrow body like that of a sausage dog. Meanwhile, its long, drooping ears and short, muscular legs remind us well of the beagle's appearance.
Size of the Doxle
It is a small to medium-sized ball of fur. A Doxle measures on average between 15 to 38 cm and weighs between 6 to 11 kg. An adult male Doxle can measure up to 41 cm and weigh 14 kg. In reality, its size will depend mostly on the stature of its parents. But in general, it will inherit more of its dachshund parent's size.
Doxle coat
We recognize this cross by its wiry and smooth coat. But there are also long-haired variants. It most often sports a black, golden, brown, and white coat that can be speckled with red or yellow.
As for grooming, its coat is easy to maintain. It has moderate grooming and maintenance needs. Besides frequent brushing, a bath every 6 or 8 weeks is usually more than enough.

What is the temperament of a Dachshund-Beagle cross?
As a perfect companion dog, the Doxle is an affectionate dog that particularly enjoys quality time with its owner. Whether it's playing with you or curling up in a warm blanket, it's always ready.
Because of its gentle and adorable nature, it is perfectly suited as a pet or even as a watchdog for seniors.
However, it can show a quite playful and high-energy side. A trait it has naturally inherited from the dachshund and the beagle. π
As a reminder, the dachshund was originally developed to hunt and dig out small game, especially badgers. For its part, the beagle is known as a breed of dog used in packs to track hares in Great Britain.
From these two energetic breeds, we get a ball of fur that can be lively and energetic. Thus, while a short daily walk is highly recommended so it can burn off its excess energy, going on regular explorations in nature would be just as beneficial for its health.
Hiking in the mountains or forest, for example, would be the perfect opportunity to let it live out its true nature as a hunter and tracker for a while.
Coexistence of the sausage dog-beagle cross with other animals

In principle, this is a cross that gets along perfectly well with other animals. It especially loves to be in the company of its own kind.
In reality, it does not like being alone. Let's not forget that the beagle is a pack dog that is used to living in groups. It can therefore be particularly sociable with other dog breeds as well as other animal species (such as a cat).
Nevertheless, the behavior of a doxie-beagle cross towards other animals depends on the training it received from a very young age.
Indeed, you should know that because of its parents' origins (hunting dog breeds), it is possible for the Doxle to develop its hunting instinct, which may lead it to consider some small pets as prey.
π This type of problem mostly occurs when it has not been socialized from a very young age.
However, with good training accompanied by a good dose of patience and perseverance from its owner, it is quite possible to teach a Doxle how to behave well towards other animals.
It is a particularly intelligent dog with a good learning ability. It can therefore understand quite quickly what you expect from it.
Note, however, that if living together seems complicated, it is always advisable to seek advice from a professional dog trainer.
Potential health problems of a dachshund-beagle cross
In principle, the Doxle is a sturdy and healthy dog. It rarely gets sick, especially if its owner ensures a healthy lifestyle. You should know that a Dachshund-Beagle cross can live on average up to 13 years.
In rare cases, it may nevertheless develop certain diseases that often affect small and medium-sized dogs, namely:
- Discopathy: a disease of the intervertebral discs.
- Hip dysplasia: a malformation of the hip.
- Patellar luxation (dislocated kneecap).
- Epilepsy.
Regardless of your dog's cross or breed, always get an annual check-up and ask your veterinarian for advice.
Final thoughts
Adopting a Doxle can be a new way to discover a whole different side of our favorite dog breed. Even if the mixed version has its own personality, which is a bit more laid-back than our dear dachshund, it has still inherited the good traits of its parents.
Given that it is a cross that is still not very common, we would be delighted to get feedback from owners currently living with a Doxle.
