Type and History of the Dachshund

Dachshund Types
There are 3 varieties:
- Smooth-haired Dachshund (short hair)
- Wire-haired Dachshund
- Long-haired Dachshund
And this dog can be found in 3 sizes: (smallest to largest)
- Kaninchen Dachshund
- Miniature Dachshund
- Standard Dachshund
History of the Dachshund
The Dachshund (or German badger dog) was bred in Germany hundreds of years ago to hunt badgers. It is a hunting dog.
"Dach" means badger and "hund" means dog πΆ
Standard Dachshunds were used to hunt deer, badgers, or foxes, while smaller Dachshunds, miniatures and kaninchens were bred to hunt hares and ferrets.
The Dachshund, being a terrier-type dog, has short, strong legs that allow the dog to dig out game and enter small, narrow passages.
The three varieties of Dachshunds were created at different times: the first was the smooth-haired, then the long-haired, and finally the wire-haired.
Also, all three types of Dachshunds are known for their long backs and short, muscular legs, which explains the less-than-flattering nicknames "sausage dog" or "hot dog".
They also have a long snout, long, drooping ears, and a tail carried in line with the back.
The Dachshund's coat can be red, black, chocolate, white, or gray in color. Some have tan markings or are dappled or speckled.
This beautiful little dog lives on average from 12 to 16 years.
Dachshund Personality

Despite their low stature, Dachshunds are known for their courageous nature and will tackle animals much larger than themselves.
It is known to be an endearing, affectionate dog that adapts well to families and children.
The Dachshund is a loyal companion and a good watchdog! Yes, it loves to bark if it hears a suspicious sound or noise (very useful during hunting to locate prey).
This dog breed is less docile than others and will need to be trained very early (the Dachshund has the quirk of thinking it's a big dog in a small body).
Some Dachshund enthusiasts claim there are personality differences between the breed's varieties. The smooth-haired Dachshund is said to be more devoted to one family member, the long-haired Dachshund is said to be calmer, and the wire-haired Dachshund is said to be more extroverted, strong-willed, and clownish.
Dachshunds are bred as hunters, so it is not surprising that many of them love to dig when you go for a walk or just in your garden!
The Dachshund in Daily Life
Dachshunds are a good choice for apartment dwellers and people who do not have a yard.
They are popular with city dwellers due to their small size and ease of care.

But beware, it is generally a lively and active companion dog that also likes to go for walks and stretch its legs!
Furthermore, be careful not to let them become overweight from puppyhood to adulthood (they are food-motivated) or allow them to injure their backs by jumping off furniture at home (consider getting a special dog ramp).
Indeed, because of their special anatomy, the Dachshund can injure its back more easily than other breeds. Due to the length of their backs, they are susceptible to disc slippage or rupture (herniation), which can lead to partial or total paralysis.
So be vigilant about how you move and carry your little life companion!
