My Dachshund Barks All the Time: 5 Tips!
If your Dachshund Barks All the time, don't panic, it doesn't necessarily mean they are aggressive. We explain everything in this new article!
Although barking is a natural behavior for our Dachshund friends, it can be very annoying for humans and a real pain, especially for... the ears π
The following tips helped us stop our Dachshund (NΓ©o, pictured) from barking constantly.
Right away, here are the 5 best tips to calm (and eventually stop) your Dachshund's barking!
1. Stop Excessive Barking with a Consistent Sound Command
No punishment!
The best way I've found to deal with my dog when he barks is to stand up and shake a (clean, empty) gourd or container 1/4 filled with coins or other metal objects. It is very effective.
Also, I noticed that gently misting him with a spray of clean water grabs his attention and distracts him from whatever was making him bark!
At the same time, I follow up with a "QUIET" command in a firm voice, without yelling.
A behaviorist will always advise you to stand up to be physically dominant and always use the same command and firm tone to get him used to it.
Your dog will likely pause and then start barking again; you will repeat the same operation, shaking the container and giving the command "QUIET" while standing.
Praise your sausage dog enthusiastically only after he has been quiet for a few seconds (remember to reward him with treats like kibble hidden in your pocket).
2. Stay Calm When Your Dog Yaps
Β

Dogs tend to mirror their owner's energy.
It is therefore important to remain calm even if you are frustrated and angry about his barking.
At home, when you leave him alone, try to keep him away from external stimulation, for example, away from street noises, or close the curtains so he can't see outside too much and get curious.
When I am away, I also leave the television or radio on with some nice, relaxing music to help keep him calm if he has to stay alone.
He needs to learn how to stay well-behaved and maintain his tranquility even if another dog or even a cat triggers his barking. π
3. Remove the Stimulus or Your Dachshund from the Stimulus

Sometimes I may be in a situation where I cannot apply the first tip, so I use my body as a wall between my Dachshund and whatever is causing him to bark.
DOMESTIC LIFE HAS AN IMPACT ON YOUR DOG'S BARKING!
And yes... Domestic life can be very boring for a Dachshund.
It's not enough to just let your Dachshund run around on the patio or garden... Go out and have fun with him and never forget that your Dachshund is an athlete!
Constant barking is often the result of pent-up energy or boredom.
So, it is a great idea to exercise with your Dachshund daily if you can to avoid unpleasant noise pollution.
During your walks, change routes or directions. Find unusual or challenging spots if you can, like a hill or a hike in the woods.
If your Dachshund barks enthusiastically on the balcony or terrace (because of the neighbors), bring him back inside immediately and only let him out when he is calm.
Repeat as many times as necessary and never leave him unattended for too long.

4. Do Not Reinforce Your Little Companion's Barking with Affection

It is also VERY IMPORTANT not to reinforce barking with signs of affection.
In the event your Dachshund barks all the time, do not pick him up; it is not the right time at all.
Also, avoid making a big fuss over him when you leave or come home (we know it's hard...).You must avoid these displays of affection to see progress when returning home.
This way, you will not positively reinforce their barking and jumping.
I know it is incredibly difficult and seems mean not to greet your Dachshund back, but it is not natural and will only worsen their behavior.
Without realizing it (and it's not your fault), your Dachshund may be barking excessively because you inadvertently trained him to do so.
Some examples:
... Your Dachshund has therefore learned to attract attention by barking.
The strong personality of the Dachshund can easily make you fall into this trap because the very nature of barking is to get your attention.
5. Dog Barking and Temporary Separation Anxiety
If your Dachshund barks all the time due to likely temporary separation anxiety (when you go out), it is best to get help from a dog trainer (behaviorist), as it can be very difficult to change such behavior without the help of a professional.
You should know that 90% of education work is done with us, the owners, and not with the dog.
If your Dachshund's excessive barking has already become a habit, don't expect him to be completely under control overnight...
Behavioral problems are one of the main reasons why a pet is abandoned, and that is absolutely scandalous and reprehensible!
If we want to save as many of our 4-legged friends as possible, we must learn and get help if necessary, with the goal of training them correctly.
Tip: Mentally Stimulate Your Dachshund to Reduce Barking
Providing mentally stimulating activities is also very useful for relieving your Dachshund's energy and
keeping him occupied.
For example, work on obedience, offer him
games, or activities that stimulate his sense of smell: tracking,
stimulation games for dogs, or scent work π
Also, have him meet other dogs at the park or elsewhere so your Dachshund can play with other dogs in a pack! They may obviously yap a bit when greeting each other: this is normal!
Just watch out for big dogs... We have found that our Dachshund prefers small dogs, and of course, he especially prefers other Dachshunds.
Try to plan Dachshund
Meetups with acquaintances. It's as fun for the owners as it is for the dogs. Socialization is very important for your Dachshund and your well-being, as they, like us, are social beings.
Final Paw
All dogs are different and all dogs bark. It's in their nature.
You must understand that, even though you can control your Dachshund's barking, don't dreamβyou won't be able to stop your companion's barking completely, but you can reduce it through canine education π
You will need to be patient with your whining dog (several weeks of training) to replace old habits with new ones.
Dachshunds bark and use their vocal cords for several reasons:
- In response to other dogs barking
-
As a warning
- To get your attention
Out of excitement
Out of anxietyΒ
It is therefore important to identify the triggers before wanting to apply any anti-bark training method with your dog.
One last thing... You understand that the muzzle option, shock collar or anti-bark collar will not solve barking at all (should human shouting be solved by being gagged...?)
