Short-Haired Chihuahua: Charm and Character in Mini Format!
When you think of a Chihuahua, the Short-Haired Chihuahua is the one that most often comes to mind.
Popularized by television in cartoons and advertising, the smooth-coated Chihuahua variety is just about the most well-known of all small dogs.
The short-haired Chihuahua is one of two types recognized by the Société Centrale Canine, the other being the long-haired Chihuahua 😊, which belongs to Group 9 (companion and toy dogs).
There are also other varieties of Chihuahuas described by their specific characteristics. One of these is the Teacup Chihuahua (also called "dwarf" or "miniature"), which is a common name for very small Chihuahuas weighing less than 1kg.
Full of personality, short-haired Chihuahuas are mischievous and curious by nature. They make excellent pets and are extremely devoted to their owners.
Additionally, this is a dog breed that learns quickly, making them a willing yet very amusing companion. Their wariness of strangers makes them excellent guard dogs!
And if you are still wondering, the Chihuahua is the smallest of the small dog breeds, and the smallest breed of dog in general. 😜
Furthermore, there are a few important factors to consider when choosing to adopt a dog of this breed.
They have large, prominent eyes and are therefore prone to eye problems.
Chihuahuas are also sensitive to respiratory issues. To protect them and keep them in good health, their owners must keep them in a clean (and especially nice and cozy 😊) environment.
Common Name(s)
Short-haired Chihuahua, Smooth-haired Chihuahua, Apple-head short-haired Chihuahua.
Dog Breed Type
The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world and is classified among small dog breeds. Dwarf breeds are best suited as pets.
The Chihuahua is most comfortable in warm climates and won't need to be asked twice to go sunbathe whenever it can.
Origin of the Chihuahua
-> We have covered this subject in its entirety in our article dedicated to the origins of the Chihuahua and its history.
The Chihuahua is said to have been discovered in Mexico in the 1800s and often traveled in packs due to its small size to protect itself from potential predators. They were often used in religious ceremonies and prized by royalty.
It is assumed that Chihuahuas descend from hairless Chinese dogs and ancient Mexican breeds. There are only two recognized types of Chihuahuas: the long-haired Chihuahua and the short-haired Chihuahua.

Description of the Chihuahua
The short-haired Chihuahua is a small dog with a broad head and a pointed muzzle.
They have dark, prominent eyes.
There is a wide variety of colors, all of which are acceptable according to breed standards: black, white, brown, tan, chocolate, blue, fawn, gray, merle, etc.
Puppies sometimes have a "molera" or soft spot in the skull, which may or may not close as they age.
Sizes for males and females are similar, with an average height of 15 to 30 cm and a weight of 2 to 5 kg.
The short-haired Chihuahua is also called a smooth-haired Chihuahua. However, its name is not an indication of the texture of its coat, which can be either smooth and velvety or rough.
Regarding its beautiful short coat, the hair is slightly longer on the neck and tail, and short on the face and ears. 🥰
Care and Diet of the Short-Haired Chihuahua
Short-haired Chihuahuas (and long-haired ones too) can be sensitive to certain foods.
They do best on a diet of poultry and brown rice. Beef is not recommended for this breed, but ALWAYS seek advice from your veterinarian, who can guide you toward a brand of kibble.
Chihuahuas can be groomed and bathed once a month, ensuring water does not get into their ears 🐶
✅ A very practical advantage for the master/mistress's back: A small dog means a small grooming basin, like the kitchen or bathroom sink.
The short-haired Chihuahua only needs occasional brushing or can simply be wiped down with a damp cloth. Nails should be trimmed as needed.
Chihuahuas need an annual check-up and should be vaccinated as puppies at 6-8 weeks old.
As mentioned above, it is good to reduce dust as much as possible around short-haired Chihuahuas due to their predisposition to respiratory problems.
With their fine and very soft fur 😍, they shed moderately, so it will be necessary to vacuum or regularly remove hair from floors and furniture.
Housing your beloved Chihuahua
Short-haired Chihuahuas are indoor dogs and they need a warm environment.
They enjoy a cozy spot to sleep and often snuggle under blankets. It is therefore important to keep an eye on them.
Also very playful, they love to play and have fun with small toys every day!

Social Behavior of the Chihuahua
Chihuahuas are not particularly social pets with humans who are not part of their family, and they are not recommended for (young) children.
A Chihuahua can jump out of a child's hands and get hurt if not held correctly, and it will not hesitate to defend itself if mistreated.
Many breeders do not sell puppies to families with young children for fear that the dog will be injured. Chihuahuas adapt better to families with older, calm children who know how to interact with them.
Ensure that young children can only hold or pet the Chihuahua if they are sitting on the floor.
Always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise interactions between dogs and young children to prevent either one from biting or pulling an ear or tail.
👉 No dog should ever be left unsupervised with a child.
They generally get along quite well with other doggies, but they can become aggressive in the presence of other breeds and different types of household pets.
Training and Education of the Chihuahua
Short-haired Chihuahuas are intelligent and learn quickly, but their strong will can pose training challenges. Positive reinforcement is generally the most effective method.
You can hire a professional dog trainer near you.
Stimulating and Physical Activities
Short-haired Chihuahuas need daily walks just like any other dog! 3-4 times minimum per day for their physical and mental health.
Keep in mind that despite their size, many think these dogs are not athletic, whereas they have great stamina and can cover a good ten kilometers in the same day.
These are small dogs that adapt very well to human lifestyles and also love to play both indoors and outdoors.
Common Health Problems
The design of the Chihuahua's eyes and nose makes them susceptible to problems such as wheezing, colds, and glaucoma.
They can also suffer from rheumatism and stress. They should be examined promptly by a veterinarian if they show any issues.

Price and Availability of the Short-Haired Chihuahua
Short-haired Chihuahuas can be obtained from professional breeders (sometimes hobbyists) or in pet stores.
Prices vary widely but are generally between 400 and €3000.
-> We recommend you browse our supplementary article which covers the price of the Chihuahua and its adoption. 😉

Mangeard
Raide dingue de ma petite chihuahua tte blanche 1,8kg partie bien trop tôt (9ans).
